Custom teak and reclaimed teak dining tables

A custom teak dining table is the piece most often specified first and drawn last, because it is the one everything else in the room is measured from. The workshop produces dining tables seating 4 to 16 in A-grade plantation teak or reclaimed teak, on slab, trestle or extendable bases, cut to the length your room takes rather than to a catalogue size. The choice between plantation and reclaimed stock is the first decision and it is not a question of quality: they are two grades of the same species solving different problems. This page sets out the typical ranges and what the workshop needs to quote. Every piece is made to size.

Typical use

Villa

The single largest piece in a whole-house package, and usually the one that sets the tone for the rest. Long tables for a terrace or an open dining room are drawn to the room, because a table two hundred millimetres too long stops the chairs pulling out and a table too short leaves the room looking unfinished.

Restaurant

Tables specified in runs rather than individually: matched tops at one height, on bases chosen for legroom rather than looks, since a trestle in the wrong position costs a cover at every table in the room. Two-top and four-top sizes are normally drawn so they can be pushed together for larger parties.

Hotel

Breakfast room and private dining tables ordered alongside the guest room furniture in the same container, plus the occasional statement table for a lobby or a chef's table. Reclaimed teak is most often specified here, where a single visible piece is doing the work of a whole room.

Specification

Typical ranges, all pieces made to size.

The figures below describe what the workshop typically works within. They are not a list of available formats and not a statement of capacity: every piece is cut to the dimensions on your drawings.

Typical specification ranges for Custom teak and reclaimed teak dining tables
Seats 4 to 6 Typical length 1,600 to 2,000 mm
Seats 8 to 10 Typical length 2,200 to 2,800 mm
Seats 12 to 16 Typical length 3,000 to 4,000 mm
Width Typical 900 to 1,100 mm, narrower for a service run, wider for a shared centre
Height Typical 750 to 780 mm, set against your chair seat height
Top thickness Typical 40 to 80 mm, heavier on slab tops and long spans
Slab base Solid timber or stone plinth, minimal legroom intrusion at the ends
Trestle base Two A-frames with a stretcher, set in from the ends for legroom
Extendable Leaf or butterfly mechanism, typical 400 to 800 mm of added length
Seating allowance Typical 600 to 700 mm of table edge per cover

Materials and finishes

A-Grade Plantation Teak

Specified where the table is outdoors or under heavy daily use. FSC chain-of-custody documentation travels with the timber.

Reclaimed Teak

Specified for character rather than exposure rating: colonial-era Indonesian stock, for indoor statement tops. Zero-harvest declarations travel with the timber.

Volcanic Stone (Paras)

For stone tops and plinth bases. Each piece is hand-carved, so no two are identical.

Finishes

Oiled
The usual interior choice. Deepens the grain and can be refreshed locally.
Natural
For outdoor tables left to weather to a silver-grey.
Stained
Matched to a sample you supply.

Hardware

Solid brass for extension mechanisms, leaf alignment pins, stretcher bolts and levelling feet. On an extendable table the mechanism is the part that decides whether the piece is still good in five years, so it is specified rather than assumed.

Order details

Minimum order
Quoted per project rather than per piece. Private residence projects start from €10,000 and hospitality projects from €25,000, typically one 20ft container. A single table rarely reaches either figure on its own, so tables are normally quoted as part of a larger package.
Lead time
The workshop's typical production time is 8 to 10 weeks from the moment drawings and finishes are signed off. Door to door, the typical timing is 12 to 20 weeks depending on destination.
Packing
Each piece is wrapped in protective material and crated or blanket-wrapped for container loading. Packing, quality control before loading and the sea freight booking are the workshop's, through its freight forwarders. HS classification is confirmed with the freight forwarder before each shipment leaves Bali.
To quote, the workshop needs
Dimensioned drawings or a measured schedule, quantities by type, and the delivery country. An indicative customs cost estimate can be prepared at quotation stage once the destination is known.

Notes on specification

A dining table is specified from the room, not from a size chart. The two figures that matter are the length the space can carry with chairs pulled out, and the seating allowance per cover, typically 600 to 700 mm of table edge. Those two together give the seat count, and the seat count is usually what a client actually wants to know.

Base type is the decision most often made on appearance and most often regretted on use. A slab base keeps the ends clear and seats people comfortably at the head of the table; a trestle set too close to the ends puts a leg exactly where someone wants to sit. On a restaurant table, where every cover is counted, the base position is worth more attention than the profile of the top.

Questions

Plantation teak or reclaimed teak for a dining table?

Two grades of the same species, solving different problems. A-grade plantation teak is grown, milled and graded for structural outdoor performance, so it is the answer for a terrace table or a restaurant table in constant use. Reclaimed teak is recovered colonial-era Indonesian timber, specified for the character of the grain rather than for an exposure rating, and it belongs on an indoor statement top.

How long a table can be made in a single top?

The ranges on this page describe what the workshop typically works within rather than a maximum, and a long top is a question of timber availability and of how the piece travels rather than of whether it can be built. Reclaimed stock in particular is finite and varies board by board, so a very long single-slab top depends on what is in the yard when the order is placed. Raise the length at brief stage and it can be confirmed against actual stock instead of assumed.

Will a solid timber top move or crack after delivery?

Solid timber moves with humidity, and a table going from a Bali workshop to a heated European interior in winter is making a significant change in moisture content. That is why the destination is part of the specification: a top drawn for that journey is built with the movement allowed for in the construction.

What does the workshop need to quote a table?

The length and width the room takes, or a dimensioned plan if you would rather the size was worked out from the space, the chair seat height you are pairing it with, whether the table is indoors or out, the base type, and the destination country. For an extendable table, say how often it will actually be extended: a mechanism used monthly and one used twice a year are specified differently.
